As a regular passenger on the lip scrub band wagon, and after seeing many DIY posts, I was inspired to have a go myself. They’re extremely easy to make, edible and inexpensive!

The majority of recipes that I came across used olive oil, however, I substituted this with coconut oil purely on the basis of personal preference. Both are anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and a natural moisturiser – making them perfect to use in a lip scrub!

Remember – after using any kind of lip scrub, make sure to apply your favourite lip balm to keep your lips nourished. You can even use a little bit of coconut or olive oil!

What you need:

  • Caster sugar
  • Coconut oil/Olive oil
  • Honey or flavoured syrup
  • A container
  • A mixing bowl
  • A spoon

All you have to do is mix the ingredients together, adding small amounts of oil and syrup at a time until you achieve the perfect consistency. It shouldn’t be too runny and it shouldn’t be too dry!

Now that we’re well into the festive season, I decided to make a Christmas edition!

It follows the exact same recipe as the original, only, I added a sprinkling of cinnamon and nutmeg for flavouring.

With sugar lip scrubs, it’s best to use them twice a week, as exfoliating your lips too much can result in them being sore and chapped!

Coffee is a softer substance than sugar, so is kinder on the lips and can therefore be used more regularly than a sugar based lip scrub!

Because of the coffee, the colour of the lip scrub does transfer onto your lips and can get a little messy. Thus, I would recommend using this when you have a little more time to treat your lips because it needs to sit on your lips longer for it work and so you can wash it off properly.

I normally use this when I’m doing a face mask and I let it sit for around 5 minutes before scrubbing it off.

What you need:

  • Coarsely ground coffee beans
  • Coconut/olive oil
  • A container
  • A mixing bowl
  • A spoon

This coffee lip scrub uses the exact same method as the sugar lip scrubs! If you’re not keen on the taste of coffee, you can add honey or any kind of syrup/flavouring to make it to your taste!

Have you tried to make your own lip scrubs? Do you prefer them to store bought ones?
